How to change the front brake pads on a VW Jetta? What special tools do I require to replace brake pads on my vehicle? Change the Torx set screw and tighten up the 2 caliper bracket bolts to about 59 ft-lbs with a torque wrench. Slightly tighten up the 5 lug bolts in a criss-cross or "star" pattern with the lug nut wrench. It would be best to utilize a torque wrench or an electric effect wrench with a torque stick to correctly tighten the lug nuts. Continue progressively tightening the lug bolts in a criss-cross or star pattern to 1/4 to 1/3 turn past hand tight or about 88 ft-lbs (120 Nm) of torque.
Next, snap the metal tabs on the back of the new inner brake pad into the caliper piston. Get rid of the inner pad from the caliper assistance. Set up the lower end of the inboard shoe into the groove supplied in the support. Position the outboard shoe in the caliper with the ears at the top of the shoe over the caliper ears and the tab at the bottom of the shoe engaged in the caliper cutout. Position the outboard pad with the ears of the pad over the caliper ears and the tab at the bottom taken part in the caliper cutout.
